Adding a Water Feature to Your Yard
There are many good reasons to think about adding a water feature to your outdoor living space. One is water has a peaceful relaxing quality to it, and a water feature allows you to bring this natural beauty right into your own yard. Maybe you feel that your backyard is lacking a certain something like a focal point or special feature, a water feature might be just the thing to bring that focus and new life to your outdoors.
You may be thinking that there is a lot of care and upkeep to a water feature and therefore it may not be worth the hassle. I am here to tell you they are much less labor intensive then you may think. By understanding how your water feature lives and breathes and by following a few simple guidelines, you will be able to enjoy this special feature and small natural eco system for as long as you own your home.
There are many different types of water features to consider, such as a fountain, a pond or a waterfall.
Water fountains are easier to deal with then a pond or water garden. Fountains must be regularly cleaned, but really require little upkeep. They would just consist of some water contained in something, a circulation pump and a fountain head. It could be as simple as a bubbling rock with the water hidden under some washed stones where the water returns back to its container to be circulated again. Or as big as you have room for. You have all seen elaborate fountains outside hotels and public places. The water is usually shallow and needs to be kept clean with a filtration system.
When creating a pond or water garden, it is vital that you understand the relationship between the plants and fish which coexist in your mini eco system. When you first start to establish your water garden you will probably need to invest a little more time if you want it to be successful. If you want your water garden to thrive, you’ll need to take special care to choose the right fauna and flora. Ensure you don’t have an excessive amount of chlorine in your water, especially if you have fish but letting your water sit for a day before adding the fish will get rid of the excess chlorine.
Many new pond owners have problems with algae. Adding a few fish can greatly help control the algae problem, as can floating plants which help to reduce the amount of sunlight getting into the water (which causes the algae grow). You will want to install a pump and some kind of filter if you have fish and want to keep the water clean and you don’t want to be cleaning out your pond every few weeks besides changing the water in your pond is not a good idea anyway. You should also regularly check the pH level of your water (it should be between six and eight). The color of the water should be a coppery color when it is healthy. Once your pond is established you will likely find the upkeep to be quite minimal.
Waterfalls are most often added to ponds along with a bit of a creek and give the pond its sound. This sound adds tranquility and can also muffle street noise.
Adding a water feature to your yard can literally transform your entire surroundings. Fountains, ponds and waterfalls all add a natural beauty and serenity to any outdoor living area, no matter how small or modest. The only other thing you need is a place to sit and enjoy it and some great outdoor furniture to sit on. I have two ponds in my yard and I love them. One is about 5’ in diameter and the other about 3. Yes they are small but they fit my small yard.

Any water feature will greatly increase the aesthetics and value of your landscaping. In addition to the audio and visual pleasure the water itself provides, a water feature may also attract a variety of birds adding even more attraction.

Also to help keep maintenance low, when you decide on a water feature positioning is key. Try not to place it under any trees which will in turn help keep it free from falling leafs and debris!
