Wooden Hot Tubs Great for Socializing
So you’re looking at hot tubs and spas and wondering which one to buy. Salesmen want to talk about jets, pumps, filters, and heaters. The most important reason to buy a hot tub or spa is to be able to soak and socialize in “hot water” so the important features are depth, leg room, and lovely, glorious hot water bubbling over your shoulders.
Wood hot tubs are not a new concept; they have been used for centuries all over the world. It was during the Second World War that the Americans noticed the wood soaking tubs in Japan. As a result they converted the wooden wine vats into wooden hot tubs. So Americans began to experience social bathing with wooden hot tubs. Today though acrylic spas are more prevalent, wooden tubs are still being purchased because of their many benefits.
Most of us get pains in our neck and shoulders. To get water over your shoulders without sitting on the floor, you need a tub over three feet deep. If you don’t have water over your shoulders and on the back of your neck, you’re not hot tubbing. Lack of depth is a serious limitation for many spas.
There are many other reasons for choosing a wooden tub over a plastic spa.
Features of wooden hot tubs
1. Wooden tubs are deep allowing more water to surround the bather giving a greater effect of massaging and buoyancy for the bather. There is also greater leg space so tall bathers are able to comfortably stretch their legs.
2. The wooden tubs do not crack, chip or blister like the plastic spa. To clean the wooden tub, drain the water, rinse the tub and scrub using a soft brush. The out side of the tub will turn gray if the natural wood is not varnished. So give a finish to the tub as per direction of an expert.
3. Natural resistance to decay is a concern while choosing the type of wood your hot tub is made from. The wood used should be decay resistant and maintain that resistance in warm water. The woods that are mostly used are teak, cedar, and cypress.
4. For tight places or indoor installations wooden tubs are assembled on site and can be carried through any door way whether it’s wide or narrow. This also means they can be easily shipped and fit just about anywhere
5. There is a misconception that wooden tubs are more hazardous to your health as they harbor bacteria. Improperly sanitized, both wooden and plastic spas can represent health hazard. So regardless of the material proper sanitation is the key.
There is one thing you need to be aware of.
Wooden tubs and leakage
Wooden tubs do leak initially for few days after they are assembled. This is so because the wood needs to expand to its full saturation point. If after a few days the leak continues, it could be due to manufacturing defect or assembling defect. It could also be caused by the over-usage of water sanitizers like chlorine or bromine. You need to be careful while using these products as they can cause damage to individual wood cells. The visible sign is the white marks on the walls or the floor of the tub. This substance does build up in the normal course of time, but very slowly if the levels of sanitizers are correct. There are over the counter products that will mend the leaks. Do get help from where you bought it or a professional for maintenance or leak prevent tips.
Traditional, natural wooden tubs offer a silent steaming refuge from the stresses of modern life. The cedar smells sweet and wonderful. Wooden hot tubs are beautiful, rustic, and very deep and feel wonderful.
