Working with A Small Yard

There are plenty of things you can do with a small yard to help it look great, and still have some usable space. The key is to plan well, and to choose plants and designs that are not too over powering. Even though you may not be able to have large boulders or a large flower garden, or a large pond it is still possible. So let’s look at how to have a beautiful landscape that surrounds your home making it look great and one that helps you feel comfortable and want to spend time there.

Working with A Small YardUsing Raised Beds
Building a raised bed allows you to create an attractive feature for your small yard without having to worry about taking up too much space. It really helps if you build up instead of building out in order to save space. You can build these raised beds for your plants fairly easily yourself which will allow you to save a lot of money. In fact, just having a small yard, your landscaping costs should be less anyway. For something really different try building a bed on planks of wood that is designed with wheels. This way you have a moveable landscape that you can move around wherever you want!

Use Containers
Another method of maximizing a small landscape space is to use containers for your plants. These containers save you from using a large section of your yard for flowerbeds or a vegetable patches. These types of gardens allow you to easily choose where you want your plats to grow. By using containers you can have your plants growing even where there would be no dirt for them to grow like on a deck, patio or porch. Plants in containers also take up less space, and you can move them around for design or to utilize the sun better. Also depending upon your use of the space for a certain day this moveable landscape can be very convenient. There are very few plants that don’t do well in containers, even small trees. The containers themselves can also be used for design effects.

Use the right colors
Did you know that cool colors like blue actually make a space look larger? Therefore, if you would like your yard to feel and look larger, choose light cool colors for your plants and their surroundings that make it look and feel that way. The colors of the plants are really important. Plants such as Blue Spruce and Alberta Pine are good examples of plants that add a decorative touch while helping your property look bigger. In fact, Alberta Pines are rather small trees, so they do not take up very much space while at the same time conferring a feeling of maximum space. So don’t forget to take into account the colors in your landscape.

Working with A Small YardUse a Small Rock Garden
Another idea for small landscaping spaces is a small rock garden. They are always an attractive feature. Make sure that it is in a place that is out of the way yet visible. A little nook or corner of the property, or even up against the house on a raised bed, will keep it out of the way for when you want to have a party or when you mow the lawn. Choose your rocks carefully to complement each other, and choose plants that go with the rocks and that will not spread too much. Plants that are good for rock gardens are often small and will be in scale with your yard. Hens and chicks are great plants for use in a small rock garden. The rock garden adds an attractive feature yet does not need to take up much room.

Working with A Small YardUse a Small Water Feature
Finally, it really is possible to use a small water feature in a limited landscape space. You could put a small serenity type fountain in your rock garden. Even a small birdbath can add a feeling of elegance to the yard. And the great thing about buying a small water feature is you can buy them complete and they cost much, much less than putting in a big pond or even a medium size waterfall. Water features come in a variety of types and designs, and it is very likely that you can find one to fit the size and look of your yard. You also can put in a small one of your own design that fits your yard. Utilize a corner or an area that would otherwise not be very usable but make sure it is close to the deck or patio so you can sit and enjoy it.

Even if your yard is small, it is possible to design a landscape that enlarges your space in an attractive manner. By carefully designing your yard, using small features and cool colors, and by thinking about what would help give your yard a touch of elegance, you can have a cozy and attractive landscape surrounding for your home.
