Reflections at the Pond…
We have a small back yard. A number of years ago my husband decided that it needed to have more than a sandbox for the kids, a kiddy pool and a tree to climb. Our kids had grown past that stage and our yard décor needed to “move on” as well. So he started digging, first to level our yard which had been at an awkward slant, then to create two small ponds. Because of the leveling we then needed several steps to get into the yard so he built two levels of flower beds alongside these steps which he soon transformed into a wonderful flowing “English Garden” (which is a combination of flowers and plants of many colors, shapes and sizes, in a natural, wild look) and in the corner of the sunken yard we now have two ponds connected by two small waterfalls, complete with water lilies, tall grasses, and fish. While sitting out in the yard on my teak lounger
engrossed in my favorite pastime, reading, I am amazed at how much privacy is created by these ponds. We live in a city, on a busy corner, with cars screeching, buses stopping and going, and children and dogs romping nearby. Yet inside my fenced in yard beside the steady sound of these little waterfalls the noises become distant, even to the point where I am no longer aware of them. The flowers and grasses wave in the gentle breeze and I am able to unwind. It took some hard work for my husband to get to this point because he did the digging and planting himself, but now each year we enjoy the fruits of his labor and vision. Our little yard has entertained many friends and all are amazed at the comfort and quiet of this small, cozy space. It continues to be a work in progress as spaces get filled with plants, such as a rock garden under our tree where grass didn’t get enough light to grow, pieces of comfortable wood outdoor patio furniture replace cheap plastic pieces, and we’re playing with possibilities of getting rid of the grass centre by filling it in with tile or a wood decking to make it easier for walking and entertaining. Our lighting is temporary at this time – lanterns with candles and tea lights to create atmosphere and visibility in the evenings, but we take them in and out as needed so the candles don’t melt in the heat of the day. It is always open to a hundred possibilities of enjoyment.
Perhaps you too would enjoy a little haven in your backyard, inexpensive, informal, yet planned and full of surprising little bursts of beauty and invitations to get away from the demands of our busy days. Dave has lots of experience and keeps on birthing more ideas each time he looks at areas that need developing – put some of his tips to work for you and enjoy the results. You’ll be amazed at all the benefits from even small changes.

Garden ponds are quite interesting. I have never had one and I’m not sure where I would put it but I sure like the way they look. thanks
