Hassle-free Weekend Gardening
As a weekend gardener everyone needs some sound understanding of what it takes to have a hassle-free gardening experience. Our goal sometimes needs to be to create a garden that practically takes care of itself. If not you may find you’re never able to escape the responsibilities and it seems never-ending work required by a high-maintenance garden.
If you want to avoid this fate you need to start by making a critical examination of the maintenance of your yard and garden. Start by taking a stroll around your property and make note of how much time you take to tend to various areas.
• Are there some areas you love so much that no matter how much work they are you’re not going to change them?
• Are there areas that you are pleased with and take less care?
• Can you visualize any areas being down sized, or that can be improved by making it a low-maintenance design?
• Which plants right now require the most care?
• Which is the most difficult area of your lawn to mow?
Take this tour having a really critical look and with a notebook. Takes notes about what you see and what you imagine could be, and what you are currently faced with. As you do this preliminary overview take into consideration what you “hate” to do in regards to gardening work. You want to get rid of these areas first and foremost.
Everyone has a different take on this subject. Some hate mowing the lawn, others actually enjoy the exercise and like getting out in the sun. Some find weeding tedious, others will enjoy the process of grabbing weeds by the fistful and yanking them forcefully out of the ground. You may even know someone who actually wanders into the neighbor’s yard pulling out weeds (much to the surprise and cheerful appreciation of his neighbors).
So, part of your ‘yard tour’ is to make note of the areas that require work; how you feel about each one, and listing which are particularly time-consuming.
- Once you’ve got your list done, take it and put a check mark next to those items you intend to keep no matter how much maintenance they may require.
- Then put a question mark (?) next to the ones you enjoy looking at, but are also high-maintenance and take more work then you would like. Later you will discover timesaving techniques you can surely apply to many of these problem areas.
- Now plan on making your aim to eliminate those areas left UNMARKED. You’ll want low maintenance ways to turn these areas into sources of pleasure, instead of drudgery.
The truth is you can’t DO anything to lessen the strain until you first SEE the problems you presently have out there in your yard. So do this tour as a first step to achieve true joy and freedom in your gardening experience.
Then you may want to have a look at this book: “The Weekend Gardener”- Simple weekend projects for a great garden, which has specific ways to combat your problem areas and turn it into a hassle-free garden that’s easy to maintain on weekends.
