New Patio Doors can Inspire Outdoor Living
After updating the landscaping in your back yard this summer and creating a beautiful new outdoor living space, maybe it’s time to switch out your old back or patio door with a new entry system. 
Patio doors are one of the most popular features in any home. They can literally change your view of your outdoor living space and how it works with the rest of the house. They are also a great source for extra light in your home and provide visual enjoyment of your outside surroundings as well as easy access. With this better access and openness you can enjoy your outdoor area all that much more. They are also a great feature that will attract buyers if you put your home up for sale.
Patio doors are not just sliders anymore. There are French doors, double sliders, or doors that have one stationary door and one swinging hinged door. They are constructed from a wide range of materials, including wood, clad wood, vinyl and fiberglass.
Quality vinyl doors are one of the most economical choices. These patio doors are gradually replacing traditional wooden doors and are available in a variety of different colours and styles, with more advanced safety features. Due to this hard wearing and durable material these patio doors do not require polishing or painting as the colour is solid throughout, and are easier to maintain than wooden doors. They are growing significantly in popularity due to their durability, low maintenance (they won’t distort or fade over time and won’t peel, crack, blister, rot or decay) and low cost.
Patio doors are also made with tough safety glass and hence they are highly durable as well as safe. Glass doors are also optionally manufactured with several layers of glazing, low-e coatings, and low conductivity gases between the glass panes. The low-e is a coating between the glasses reflect ultra violet rays back outwards thus protecting your furniture from fading and it reflects heat waves back into your house providing less heat loss in winter. One of the gasses used between the panes of glass is Argon and it provides a better insulation value than dead air thus saving heating costs in the winter. Both of these extras come at very little extra cost.
Security is an important consideration in choosing a patio door, but many come with multi-point locking systems. Even though Patio doors are often blamed for being easy to break into there are several things you can do to make your door so secure that the only way in is to break the glass down.
The first thing any homeowner has to do when engaging in a patio door installation is to determine what type of patio door is most appropriate for their home. With this in mind, here are five key considerations for how to choose the perfect patio door.
1) Sliding doors work well for places where space is tight. In-swing, out-swing and french doors need additional space to operate, but can be easier to operate. Think about your furniture placement and traffic flow before determining which system is right for your space.
2) Wider doorways provide greater access and stronger connections to the outdoors. They can also become beautiful focal points. I find 5’ sliding or swing patio doors too narrow for easy access. Today there are all kinds of unique options that are available from some manufacturers for a price.
3) Allowing the fresh air in is also a benefit of this indoor-outdoor living. So screens and how the door works can be important. Some doors have one operating door and the other half acts like a window so you can have it open and still have the convenience of a swing door and to help corral children and pets.
4) The glass is a main feature for a patio door, and selecting the right type is Important. Low-E glass helps lower energy bills all year and protects against UV fading. There are also different styles of decorative tempered glass which can offer privacy or class to your door, yet still allow for natural light.
5) The differences in materials can offer different style, performance and price advantages and can help achieve different goals when it comes to coordinating with the various architectural aspects of your home.
Patio doors are a good investment, and an excellent way to bring the outdoors into your home – without the cold and the rain. Being able to sit back in your armchair and look out on the garden is very relaxing and this view can be better than any other design feature you may have in your home. It pays to be choosy though, because the right door can help highlight and enhance your outdoor living space, making it more usable and comfortable.

Hang a patio door from the house to the deck is a wonderful thing when it works good. I think I would rather have a garden door. They look the same but a garden door swing instead of sliding.

You are right a garden door is a great option. The only problem with a garden or swing door is it occupies room so you have to have room in the house for it to swing in or on the deck for it to swing out but in many ways it is a better door.

Sliding patio doors can come out of adjustment over a period of time or just like any door after a number of years need to be replaced. A good carpenter or door man should be able to adjust it to make it work properly or better. thanks for the question.

You have to understand that these doors are not cheap and often are hard to find at least where I live.
